Jōmon pottery is pottery which was done during the Jōmon period. "Jōmon" means "rope-patterned" in Japanese. It is called Jōmon because it describes the patterns in the clay. Parts of pottery were found in a cave in Kyushu. They date back to around 12,700 BCE. Most of the bottoms of the pottery were round. The designs became more intricate and detailed, as did technology. Jōmon pottery is perhaps the oldest in the world.
